The Young Investors Society Global Youth Investment Summit winners of the Global Stock Pitch and Case Study Competition each won a Summer internship at an investment firm.

“In my internship at Advisory Group for Life, I was given the opportunity for Mr. Barrus to teach my group about how to allocate funds for retirement and saving in general. It was a pleasure, and that knowledge will be useful for the rest of my life. The internship taught me about financial planning, the bucket strategy, and the relationship between risk and growth.
The way Mr. Barrus got us thinking about finance involved reading news articles and explaining not only what they said, but more importantly, the greater impacts of it in relation to other sectors. This is a skill that is useful in nearly every discipline, and it is something that I will continue to develop. When we discussed the articles, Mr. Barrus would ask us questions that would connect both topics we discussed and topics in a broader financial scope. It was also interesting to dive into current financial events and be able to form deeper opinions of them using the knowledge acquired in the internship and through YIS.
The case study at the end of the internship was a great way to see how the 3-bucket strategy would be used in practice. We were given a client and some information about their assets, and were asked to create a retirement plan given their circumstances. It was a creative exercise, as I had to come up with a unique plan for the client, and I was able to use my prior experiences to make a decision, as well as a financial one, as I needed to allocate assets in a way that would keep risk levels where the client needed.
Overall, the internship inspired me to read up more on financial news, and think more about assets, risk, and saving, which are useful skills for any financial discipline.”
