Internship Highlight-Shawn C.

The Young Investors Society Global Youth Investment Summit winners from the Global Stock Pitch and Case Study Competition each won a Summer internship at an investment firm.

Below, you can read Shawn’s experience at Advisory Group for Life.

“To start, I’d like to thank Steve Barrus from Advisory Group for Life for giving my fellow YIS interns and me such a great summer internship experience. While it wasn’t quite what I initially imagined for one of my first finance internships, it turned out to be an incredible learning journey.

A major highlight of the program was the “introduce an article” segment at the start of every class. Each meeting, all of us interns had to introduce an article from WSJ, Reuters, The New York Times, etc., and share some of our takeaways with the group. Personally, I’ve always kept up with the political and economic state of the world, so coming into this assignment, I felt a little bored because I expected I already knew a lot about the market. Much to my surprise, however, I actually barely understood the market. And in fact, every day I learned something new about some nook and cranny in the market that had a major effect on one very specific area. Nowadays, I always look into niche articles on the WSJ or Google to find that extra bit of information to show off to my parents.

One last thing: the case study that we were assigned to work on was also amazing. Over the past year, I’ve done so many case studies both for competitions and academics that I’ve grown very passionate about this format. Every time I hear the words “case study,” my brain lights up, and I get super excited to do my best, even if sometimes it’s just for fun.

In conclusion, while my career goals haven’t changed, this experience deepened my understanding and gave me invaluable tools for the future.

Thank you to everyone who made this experience so amazing!”
